Colt McCoy

Tim Griffin's hatin' got me thinking about the most divisive person currently associated with Texas football program not named Greg Davis. Malcolm in the middle Colt McCoy's astounding freshman season is difficult to remember through the 18 interception fog from the past season, but cannot be ignored.

In my opinion, the difference in Colt's performances can be attributed to the relative experience levels of his offensive lines, not him totally forgetting how to play football. In 2006 he had 4 of the 5 starters from the Rose Bowl team giving him enough time to check his playbook for the ideal receiver to pass to, and had a record breaking season. In 2007, he had one returning lineman in front of him, and nearly gave me an ulcer.

The good news is that the 2008 version of the offensive line features experienced players across the line. The only underclassman on the line will likely be Kyle Hix, and even he is the kind of manimal that should make Colt's life markedly easier. On top of the improvements in the offensive line, we should be treated to improved decision making on his part as far as scrambling is concerned, considering he will not be running for his life on every other play. Listening to the general consensus of the Longhorn nation, you might think Colt won't be the starter at the end of the season. Listen to the rest of the college football world, and you get a whole different opinion (ask the Davey O'Brien committee).
